We are delighted to offer this superb antique Japanese carved wooden tobacco box dating from around the 1880's.
The circular lidded box is of a very dense dark hardwood, it has a fine carved flowering branch with a flying insect on the lid while the sides have a carved relief texture that gives a bark like or hammered effect. Inside there is a drum humidor with a removable lid, this has a flower petal carved onto the top.
The exterior height is 4 5/16", the exterior diameter is 5 5/8", the interior diameter is 5", the interior depth is approx 3", the interior drum is
approx 1 3/4" internally. All measurements are approx. as it is a little difficult to be exact due to the double drum shape
Condition is outstanding with a few flea bites, time and careful previous owners have treated this lovely item well, see photo for detail.
The box is not marked but is an exceptional example of Meiji period (1868-1912) craftsmanship, it would be an excellent addition to a Japanese accessory or smoking collection.
