An unusual octagonal hand carved faceted agate bowl that measures 4 1/4" diameter by 1 1/2" high, that dates to around the late 18 or early 1900's. The bowl would originally have been designed as a decorative rock specimen, it is rare, the only other I could find on the internet was virtually identical but larger, it was from a specialist dealer and priced at $4,000 (!). The stone is a beautiful soft semi translucent gray and beige, which is very much enhanced by the fine cutting.
The condition of the bowl is excellent, there are some inclusions that go through the stone, the main one being on the base, this appears entirely original to the piece and stable, there are no significant chips or other damage, see photos.
This is a very beautiful bowl that would be a great addition to a an antique natural history or gemology collection, it is rare, lovely and very desirable.
