Beautiful framed silk hankie or pin cushion cover, dating to circa 1918, this would have been a souvenir brought back from France by an American soldier as a gift for a their mother or sweetheart during WWI.
The embroidery features an American eagle surmounted by the motto "Souvenir de France", it is worked on very fine cream silk with a deep lace border which is further embellished by pink ribbon with bows to the corners. The embroidery measures approx 10" square , it is in a fairly basic frame measuring 15" wide by 12" tall, this is rather plain but has helped to preserve the piece in very good order with just the slightest fading.
This is a lovely souvenir piece from the First World War, I cannot help but think of the bravery of the soldiers, who saw terrible carnage on a daily basis, but still brought sweet little gifts for loved ones at home......
