This is an absolutely fabulous antique hand painted papier mache powder box dating to around the 1890's, with lovely art nouveau styling. The box has the normal black lacquered finish, with gilt decoration including a really beautifully rendered portrait of a lady. The box measures approximately: 2 1/2" tall by 3 1/4" diameter, condition is good for the age, it shows slight age related wear to the gilding, usage chipping and wear around the inner rims (this does not show when closed), and has lost the powder puff, but these are all fairly minor and the box displays very well, it is striking and attractive. This is a fine example of this form with unusual styling, and would make a great addition to a collection of antique vanity items, or of papier mache, see photos as part of the description.
