This splendid intaglio has a carving of the Goddess Demeter (Ceres) Goddess of the Bountiful Harvest and the Nurturing Spirit. In Greek mythology Demeter ~ also known as the Roman goddess Ceres, was the goddess of the harvest and was beloved for teaching humans how to grow, preserve, and prepare grain.
The goddess is always represented by a stalk of wheat or grain and in this intaglio she has wheat sheaves in her hair, and a stalks of wheat and a sickle. The intaglio is carved into a rectangular shaped deep sepia colored sardonyx. The carving is deep and very finely detailed, in particular the Goddess's hair. The stone to the other side of the locket is onyx - a chalcedony with black and white bands. The white side is visible when the locket is opened. Both gemstones are in perfect condition.
The gold work to the sides of the locket are very finely fluted, and the swivel frame is beautifully crafted in solid gold and moves securely.
Inside there is a gold frame for the single glass and the original lining paper which is present, but sadly the glass cracked in one corner. The locket hinge is firm and the locket closes as it should. Unmarked, the gold tests to at least 14 carat and is a superb old gold rose in color. This piece is in wonderful antique condition - it has been well cared for over it's 170 + years.
