An extraordinary 14k rose gold Victorian antique fob locket - beautifully made and dating to circa: 1870 - 1880. This oval shaped double sided locket has Dresden blue opaque chalcedony on one side and superb gold ornamentation on the other. It is hinged at the top, has a pivoting bail and it opens from the bottom. Inside are gold bezels holding the original glasses on both sides. The chalcedony is set with eight prongs.
The gold work has very fine engraved decoration surrounding the cut away shapes, and the raised center piece to the front has superb fine chasing with scalloped edges. The locket is a great size for a fob, measuring 1 3/8 inches long, excluding the bale (just under 2 inches with it); 1 inch wide, with a thickness of 3/8 inch. The center piece and the stone each measure 6/8 x 5/8 inch. The locket weighs 11 grams.
Although unmarked, it has been assayed to determine the gold to be 14 carat. This locket is in extraordinary condition, without any damage or wear and retaining the bezeled glazing inside, which is most unusual for pieces of this age.
This is such a fine antique fob locket, with the most beautiful workmanship and wonderful attention to detail. It has been cared for with great respect over it's long life, and will make a wonderful addition to an antique collection.
