This stunning pair of earrings have large pear shape Saphiret drops of fine colour with a wide range of clarity and density. The colour is soft brown with flashes of blue. The stones are beautifully faceted to give them glimmer and a rich ethereal glow. Each saphiret is suspended by a long gold chain from a cultured pearl set above in 9 carat gold. The effect is quietly stunning. The original screw fittings are marked with a 9 carat stamp.
Saphiret glass was made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid-19th century by mixing melted gold into sapphire-colored glass. The result was a glass which looked brick red or brown, but reflected blue on the surface. Production of this glass was stopped shortly after the turn of the century due to the increase in the value of gold. So the majority of jewellery pieces containing saphirets are either Victorian, Edwardian, or Arts and Crafts.
Dimensions : the earrings hang 1 - 3/4 inches from the ear ; the stones are 5/8 x 1/2 inch ; the pearl 5mm, or 3/16 inch ; weight is 5.9 grams. They are in fine antique condition with no visible blemish.
