This stunning lavaliere necklace has a large pear shape Saphiret drop of fine colour with a range of clarity and density. The colour is soft brown with flashes of blue and it is faceted to give a rich ethereal glow. Above are a large and a smaller crystal stone, each lovely quality and faceted to glimmer. The setting and fine chain is unmarked and tested sterling grade silver. The effect is quietly stunning.
Saphiret glass was made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid-19th century by mixing melted gold into sapphire-colored glass. The result was a glass which looked brick red or brown, but reflected blue on the surface. Production of this glass was stopped shortly after the turn of the century due to the increase in the value of gold. So the majority of jewellery pieces containing saphirets are either Victorian, Edwardian, or Arts and Crafts.
Dimensions : the total lavaliere is 15 inches in length, so worn high ; the length of the drop is 2 7/8 inches ; the saphiret stone is 5/8 x 1/2 inch ; the crystal stones are 5/16 and the smaller is 1/8 inch; weight is 4.6 grams. The piece is in fine antique condition with no visible blemish to the stones and good patina to the silver.
A gorgeous lavaliere necklace with saphiret drop, set with crystal and silver.
