Saphiret glass was made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid-19th century by mixing melted gold into sapphire-colored glass. The result was a glass which looked brick red or brown, but reflected blue on the surface. Production of this glass was stopped shortly after the turn of the century due to the increase in the value of gold. So the majority of jewellery pieces containing saphirets are either Victorian, Edwardian, or Arts and Crafts.
Dimensions : the earrings are 1 5/8 inches from the ear piercing ; the stones are just under 3/4 x 5/16 inch ; weight is 4.3 grams.
