A superb original French ring in the Belle Époque style (Belle Époque is French for "Beautiful Era") This was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic "Belle Époque" was considered a "golden age" and in the USA the epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, the epoch overlaps the end of the Victorian and the Edwardian Era. The circular design of this ring is known in French by the name 'Tourbillon' which translates in English to 'twirler' or 'twister'. Rings in this design were often given during the 19th century as a betrothal or engagement ring.
This tourbillon shape combines a four petaled flower in old mine cut diamonds with creamy natural pearls set to each side. The setting is 18 carat yellow gold with the fluted design of the petals in platinum or white gold surrounding the diamonds. There is no hallmarks visible, but the gold has been tested as 18 carat and I consider the origin of this piece to be France or Belgium. Condition is exceptional with the diamonds sparkling and bright and the pearls luminous. There is no visible blemishes to this ring.
Dimensions are : the face of the ring is 1/2 inch in width x 5/16 inch high ; the floral motif is approx 1/4 inch square ; size is US 7.5 (56 & 17¾ , Size UK: O½ ) and could be re-sized ; weight is 2.0 grams.
This is a superb French ring in a Belle Époque tourbillon design ~ just beautiful.
