These are very fine 1890's original Victorian banded agate earrings. Banded agate during the Victorian period was found around Scurdie Ness on the east coast of Scotland.
The agate used for the glossy four stones in the earrings is just stunning, with the natural colors of black with narrow strong bands blending white and grey. The pattern of banding and color is beautifully matched in the perfectly round drops which are joined with fine silver chain. The original silver hook screw fittings are unmarked as are many pieces of this early period, but these test as silver. In 1894 the screw-back earring fittings were invented, allowing women without pierced ears to wear earrings. The fittings could be replaced if desired, but as they are a very early design of these fittings and original, I leave them intact.
Dimensions are : overall the earrings are 2 3/4 inches from the ear; the agate drops are approx 7/16 inch each ; weight combined is 12.3 grams. They are in excellent condition with only gentle antique wear. The agate is in very fine condition and shows reflections in the images. The fittings work well and have fine patina.
This is a very fine collectors pair of Victorian banded agate earrings and wonderful wearable history.
