This is an antique match safe or vesta in silver. The vesta has a floral swag and shield design typical of the French Art Nouveau style. Art Nouveau (French for New Style) was an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–19010). In the Art Nouveau period the floral motif and the sinuous lines of flowers were one of the dominant themes in the decorative arts.
The vesta is beautifully crafted with the applied repousse decoration design to both sides. There is a striker to the bottom and a hinged sprung lid. And to the side there is a small loop to hang the vesta as a pendant. There is a makers mark and 800 stamped to the gilded inner edge of the lid. This indicates the origin of the piece is likely to be either Belgium or Germany as this mark was used in both countries during the late 19th and early 20th Century. It is in superb antique condition with fine patina.
Dimensions are : 1 5/8 inches long x 1 1/4 inches across; weight is 12.8 grams.
A beautifully made vesta with lovely Nouveau detail, can be worn as a pendant or collected.
