These are very fine and very substantial 1860's early Victorian banded agate earrings. Banded agate during the Victorian period was found around Scurdie Ness on the east coast of Scotland.
The agate used for the glossy six stones in the earrings is just stunning, with natural colors blending white, grey, black, to warmer hues of chocolate brown. The pattern of banding and color is beautifully matched in the perfectly round graduating drops. The original gold hook and fittings are unmarked as are many pieces of this early period, but these test as approx. 15k gold.
Dimensions are : overall the earrings are 2 inches from the ear; the agate drops graduate from is 9/16 inch across; the middle drop is 3/8 inch; the smallest 5/16 inch; weight is 17.2 grams. They are in excellent condition with only gentle antique wear. The agate is in fine condition and shows reflections in the images. One of the large drops has a natural line to the stone visible ~ natural and of no consequence.
This is a very fine collectors pair of Victorian banded agate earrings and wonderful wearable history.
