These are very fine substantial 1880's Victorian banded agate earrings. Banded agate during the Victorian period was found around Scurdie Ness on the east coast of Scotland.
The agate used for these earrings is just stunning, with natural bold white and black in the glossy stones. The pattern of banding and color is beautifully matched to the round drops which have a hollowed top allowing the smaller agate bead to nestle inside it. There is another small bead with a ring of paste stones set into silver above it ~ just stunning. The hook earwires are unmarked but test as gold of 9 - 10 carat.
Dimensions are : overall the earrings are 1 1/2 inches from the ear; the main agate drop is 7/16 inch ~ just under 1/2 inch across the centre; weight is 5.8 grams. They are in excellent condition with little sign of wear. The agate shows reflections in the images.
This is a very fine collectors pair of Victorian banded agate earrings and wonderful wearable history.
