Wonderful antique French locket crafted in pomponne. Similar to English pinchbeck, pomponne was manufactured in France from the 17th Century and like pinchbeck it is an alloy of copper and zinc. It was extensively used in jewelry of the period to resemble gold. This beautifully locket has bezel set almandine garnets and small round turquoise stones to the front. The lozenge shaped garnets and the central garnet are faceted and gleaming. The pomponne is delicately etched to the locket face and the bale with a plain polished back. The hinge is strong and condition is fine with only surface wear to the metal.
Dimensions are : the locket is 2 inches in length including the bale and 15/16 inch in width; weight is 12.7 grams. Please note : the gold chain shown in images is not included.
This is a superb antique French locket. Wonderful to wear and collect.
