are 19th Century Globe, J.W. Schermerhorn & Co. 14 Bond St. New York ca. 1867

5 inch diameter table globe on stand, 9 inches tall in total

Very detailed, Engraved hand colored gores over plaster with paper mache core. Orb sets onto spindle. Base appears to be walnut with ebonized finish. Oceans in tan with many Pacific islands, detailed land masses with many place names.

Continental United States shows no Gadsden Treaty border. Large territories of Nebraska, New Mexico, Dacota, Utah, Oregon and Washington. Alaska is "U.S. Terr." and Canada called British America. As a result we date this to ca., 1867.

Most cities are in larger type than their states or territories. Minnesota, “Ind Ter.”, and Utah are depicted. Yellowstone River is shown but no Yellowstone Park. Hawaii called Sandwich Islands. Suez is marked, but canal not shown. Anachronistic elements present too: Tasmania called Van Dieman's Land, Arizona and Idaho Territories not present. Transatlantic “Submarine cable” shown with two lines suggesting completion after installation of second line 1866.

Has ecliptic, analemma, and makers mark

A few small surface stains, scuffs and yellowed varnish. Minor losses near south pole and in one gore near antarctic circle (see photos). Generally very good condition overall. A rare and unusual piece.
