In 1901 Royal Doulton produced a series of collector plates by the American Illustrator, Charles Dana Gibson. Gibson was born in Roxbury, Mass. in 1867. He studied art in New York City. After a 2 year training period, he became an illustrator for such magazines as Harper's Weekly and Collier's. He also illustrated many books. In 1890, came the Gibson Girl. She was an example of the independent turn-of-the-century woman. Mr. Gibson published several books of his drawings including "A Widow and Her Friends" from which these plates were designed. There were originally 84 drawings in this book, Royal Doulton choosing 24 for their series.
