French Circa 1900 Tryptich Silver over Copper Virgin Mary and Angels - R Wicker
This Beautiful French tryptich was engraved by the late 19th century artist, R Wicker. It is silver plated on copper. The theme is Botticelli’s Virgin and Child with attendant angels. I am dating it to circa 1900.
I am afraid I can’t tell you much about R Wicker. He seems to have had a relation called Bernard Wicker who worked in the same style. I have found evidence of various works by R Wicker , including plaques and boxes. However I can’t find a tryptich like this.
It measures 4 and 3/16” (10.5cms) vertically. Open it measures 4 and 5/16” (11cms) across and closed 2 and 3/8” (6.1cms). It is a very heavy piece.
In the centre is an absolutely exquisite engraving after Botticelli’s Virgin and Child. I cannot begin to describe its beauty. Above it is a radiant cross with leaves and flowers. At the base in script is ‘La Vierge de Botticelli’ and ‘R Wicker’.
On the doors either side are trios of angels. They are not just mirror images but each angel is individual.
The doors close well. On the back is a fully functional stand for devotional use.
This beautiful object has some silver loss particularly on the angels with the copper showing through. However in my view this makes it even more beautiful. The exterior has some signs of age as you might expect.
It will arrive carefully protected and presented in a gift box.
