A very charming winged cherub patiently holds a large cartouche for a beautiful bourgeoise madame to place her precious watch. This piece dates towards 1900 and originates from Paris. We depict this piece with a watch for size reference: the watch and the crown (presented for size reference) are NOT included in the sale.

Romantic small accessories were at the height of popularity in late nineteenth century France. Intricately cast in bronze and a mix of metals called "laiton", they took the form of small animals, miniature furniture, cherubs and boxes with scenes that told stories. The detail in the work and the motifs were designed to richly adorn a lady's dressing table.

This pocket watch/jewelry holder is cast in bronze and laiton. It has an applied gilt finish which casts hues of copper and gilt when hit by the light. This standing example begins with a small tray which stands on four upturned feet. This tray would have held small pieces of jewelry. A large (3 1/2" tall) cherub is seated on a small stool looking down with an humble expression. He holds a large cartouche frame which is accented with roses and gleaming rays. The detailing of this small cherub is lovely; one can discern the tendrils of his hair, his chubby hands and feet, the feathers in his wings and his humble expression. There is a small hook at the top to hang a treasured watch or precious necklace. At the back you can see the point where the piece attached to the mold in two places (round hole with silver metal surrounding). The bottom shows the original (pre-gilt) patina of the metal.

It measures: 7 1/2" x 3" wide and 3 1/2" deep. The face of the cartouche measures 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". It is in good and solid antique condition. There is one tiny hole in the cartouche face (not sure how this would have happened). The patina has aged to a gorgeous deep burnished gilt hue with reflections of copper in the light.

It is a delightful treasure to display a beloved watch or a special piece of antique jewelry.
