French Art Nouveau Oak Leaves Silver and Steel Cigar Cutter - Red Tag Sale Item
This charming French cigar cutter is from the Art Nouveau period, circa 1900. It is made of mixed metals – 800-900 silver on the decorative areas and steel on the sides and interior.
In its closed position it measures 1 and 5/8” (4.2cms) by ½” (1.3cms). When open the length is extended to 2 ¾” (7cms).
There is a lovely repoussé design on the two sides ,Oak leaves and acorns are on swirling stems which leave a small space for a monogram. At the base of one side is the inscription ‘metaux divers’ – mixed metals.
At one end is a small ring and then a bail for hanging.
At the other end are two knobs. If you squeeze them together the steel cigar cutter section springs open. It functions correctly.
This very unusual piece could easily be worn on a chain as a pendant or as was intended on a watch chain. It shows some signs of age in my magnified photo but could certainly be polished further. iIt will arrive in a gift box.
