How many people know how are the battleships, submarines, aircraft, and other units of the fleet organized to fight in time of war? It is a long and interesting story, and this is only one of many points on which the author gives detailed information. A first class handbook on the planes, ships, men and equipment of the United States Fleet.

COLLECTOR’S 1943 out-of-print vintage hardcover book with original pictorial dust jacket - Fighting Ships of the U.S.A by Commander Victor F. Blakeslee. Introduction by Admiral William V. Pratt.

Magnificent art throughout, numerous color plates and black & white illustrations by artist Charles Rosner. Brilliant color frontispiece painting and duo-page endpapers front and back. Photos do not fully capture exact color hues and detail; wait until you see. WOW!

Published by Artists and Writers Guild, New York, Random house Distributors. Copyright: 1941 first edition, 1943 new and revised edition. Published just a few months before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the book provides a good idea of how Americans viewed the questions of national defense before World War II (refers to Pearl Harbor as being the "Gibraltar of the Pacific"). No isbn. Not ex-library.

Dustjacket: Commander Blakeslee has included every important fact that well-informed Americans should know about the United States Fleet. In addition, his account of daily life aboard Navy ships and at the bases, of the duties and responsibilities of ships’ officers, of the relationships between enlisted men and commissioned officers, is so interesting and so packed with information that it will be a boon to all young men who are seriously thinking of the Navy as a career. The book ends with a graphic and detailed account of tactics in a modern naval engagement.

Chapters include: Introduction, The United States Fleet, The Back Bone of the Fleet, Navy Wings, Cruisers and Smaller Fighting Craft, Naval Bases, A Ships Organization, The Navy Life, The Making of Officers, The Marines and the Coast Guard, The Navy Department, Naval Communications and Navigation, Our Merchant Marine, Building A Ship of the Line and The Navy in Battle.

Charles Rosner: (1894-1975) German-American. Rosner serve aboard the sailing ships he admired as a youth and accumulated an impressive five cape horn passages before leaving the sailor’s life in Iquique, Peru at the onset of the first world war. Worked in copper mines for war’s duration, which helped his passion for traveling resurface. The artist emigrated to Canada, onward to America, where he married and established a permanent home in New York. Rosner’s affinity for the sea propelled him into a commitment as a full-time marine painter of historic sailing vessels, and other sea-faring subjects. It is written that the quality of his work, some later reproduced as chromolithographs, deserved more recognition during his lifetime. Today his artistic accomplishment is apparent through the collections and museums that include Charles Rosner.
