FRENCH EDWARDIAN Gift Box with Chromo of Dogs - Bonne Annee
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: C.1900 or so
ITEM: On a trip to Paris about 6 years ago, I found this box along with 2 others (on offer separately). I knew at once that the box was an old drugstore box from the Edwardian period (Napoleon III in France) but I was intrigued as to the top. With not a bit of a pharmacy label in sight, someone or some company, had instead placed a Victorian chromolithograph of dogs to the top (French Poodle, Terrier and Spaniel) along with a French Victorian die cut of florals with the phrase BONNE ANNEE (Good Year). I was so intrigued with the idea that I purchased the boxes and brought them home thinking I would copy the idea using more modern materials. Well, I did try out the idea and now that I know how to do it, I've decided to let my boxes move onto new homes. The box is most definitely ONE OF A KIND (this type of chromo is soooo hard to find these days)! The box a nice size and is hinged at the back so when the lid is lifted, it stays attached to the main body. Interior is very clean and the side paper is a lovely shade of dark brown looking more like moire taffeta than paper!
CONDITION: Excellent with no real problems I can spot. There is a bit of paper residue attached to the brown paper at the back but with some light scraping, I think it an be removed.
HALLMARKS: None that I can spot.
SIZE: Box is 4-1/4" x 3-1/8" with a depth of 1-1/2".
FINAL COMMENTS: A perfect gift box for a vintage treasure!
