Vintage Bonwit Teller / Atomette N.Y. Lipstick and Mirror with Leaping Rhinestone Poodle
In its original 60s Bonwit Teller box an Atomette New York Refillable Lipstick and Mirror featuring a Rhinestone Poodle Dog. This was given to my Mother-in-Law as a gift in 1962. If she ever used it, it was seldom as can be evidenced by the excellent condition of the combination mirror and lipstick tube.
Closed it measures 2” across the circular mirror, open it measures 3 6/8 inches long. I don't know how long Atomette was in business nor when they started making this design. While researching this Mirror Lipstick combination I did find only one other and it looked to be made of brass and older. However it had the exact same poodle decoration on the mirror. I don't believe this to be a reissue, but rather a continuation of the line, the case being of newer and lighter metal than its predecessor.
Our Poodle friend is rendered in gold-tone with clear rhinestones covering his head and ears. There is also a single stone in his tail tip and all for legs near the paws, representing the “puff” that is characteristic of the Poodle's trademark grooming. He also has a clear sparkling stone in his eye. Such is appropriate for this little fella because he looks go be happily at play leaping to catch a stick his mistress must have thrown for him to “fetch”.
The mirror is in perfect condition with no loss of silvering or streaks. The lipstick tube still retains the golden sticker that reads “Atomette New York” however with the mirrors clip closing securely over it, some marks have been produced on the sticker and the outer edge of the tube itself. This is the only damage or marks to speak of on this very pristine vintage combination case. Also of note, I take closeup high resolution photographs which make damage appear to be quite a bit larger than it actually is.
I am sorry to say I can't say the same for the condition of the original Bonwit Teller store box. While the integrity of the box is still intact, it has a good deal of foxing or yellowing on the paper that covers it. Also the Label of Bonwit Teller done in gold print has suffered a bit at the bottom through sitting around for 54 years.
Bonwit Teller closed its doors in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2009. The store began in New York City in 1895. They opened another store in Philadelphia sometime prior to 1927, however I could only find records on the last location of the store which was 1700 Chestnut St. from 1927 to 2009. It had previously been located at 13st and Chestnut. The entire chain of stores, all tending to “a better class of customer” and only located in major cities is now defunct. So this is definitely also a piece of history I am offering with the mirrored case. The box even still has its original cotton batting, and it gently smells of french perfume, so there is no odor problem. Mother-in-Law always perfumed her “keepsake drawer”. (which could explain the foxing on the box now that I think of it. )
A piece of Movie Trivia: Bonwit Teller is the store in Philadelphia that Rocky a.k.a. Sylvester Stallone bought his famous Tiger Jacket in and the store is featured in the movie.
