First World War "Trench Art" petrol lighter, about 1 5/8" wide, 2 1/8" high. It appears to be fashioned from two silver plated French medals. The lighter is in good vintage condition, and has no dents or breaks, but has a few minor nicks at the edges and shows wear to the silver-plate.

Trench Art items were made from the findings of war - shell cases, belt buckles, medals and coins. The two French medals are used here. One has a lion and winged victory, with the legend (Mulhouse?) Belfort Strasbourg and the designer's name, M Pautot. The other side has a medal with a soldier bidding farewell, France and the designer's name S Crum. Both Crum and Pautot designed various French medals in the early 1900's, but I have not been able to identify the ones used on this piece.

This unique, handmade piece has been left in it's original "as found" condition. This piece comes from the family of the original owner.
