The original item from Time's Treasures Railroad & Country is now SOLD.
These exquisite sugar tongs were made for the Union Pacific Railroad by Reed & Barton. This is the claw-style designed to resemble bird feet, for use with sugar cubes. At approximately four inches long, this was a smaller size.
The pattern is called "Modern Art." Based on the 1904 date in our "Silver At Your Service" (Dominy & Morgenfruh) book, we are estimating that this piece is very early, perhaps among the first productions, because it is marked "Patent Applied For" which would have applied to the pattern design.
Around the top is engraved UP SYSTEM in deeply cut, finest script. Note, this is not stamped -- it is engraved.
Inside one arm is stamped PAT APPL'D FOR REED & BARTON 4 We are guessing the number 4 meant either the size or a piece number but can't document that.
CONDITION is superb showing NO signs of use, except for the lightest possible surface scuffing from being polished over the years (you MUST use a magnifying glass to see this - it does show in our HUGE computer enlargements). The delicate scrolling down the sides, and the details in the claws, are as sharp and crisply detailed as ever, with no rubbing or wear. There is NO tarnish and NO worn spots in the silver.
NOTE: There is one visible dark spot and several other tiny ones, just to the right of the "m" in "System."
What a wonderful addition to any collection of railway passenger dining car items, especially for a UPRR fan!
