Maxim's in Paris Artist Signed Georges Stein 1909 French Postcard
This Paris postcard puts the spotlight on La Place de La Concorde, but the famous obelisk is upstaged by the red awning advertising Maxim's! Note the bellhop has just opened the door of the horse-drawn carriage for a couple entering the famous restaurant. Still, center stage is a woman, solo and independent -- as is so often depicted in Georges Stein's art. Stein (1870-1955) was a French Impressionist painter. Her palette has lots of browns and grays and yet the scenes are detailed and filled with action.
Mailed in 1909, this card has worn corner tips, but overall, for its age, it is in fine antique condition. Size: about 5.5 by 3.5 inches.
The card's color is more accurate in the direct scans (first 2 pics), but I often like to include a photo taken of the card at the window by natural daylight. The light makes the card look lighter than it is but the details and condition of the card "pop." If you are as infatuated with Stein's Paris street life, may I suggest you frame several with protective museum quality glass and display under spotlights to create a mini-gallery?
I also have this postcard available paired with three other Stein paintings, listed here: http://www.rubylane.com/item/274812-7714/4-Georges-Stein-Paris-Postcards-Iconic
Put "Stein" in the word search box and you'll see even more available, individual cards and groupings of Stein's Paris scenes.
