The original item from English And French Country Antiques is now SOLD.
Early-mid 19th century LARGE English, blown-glass melon garden cloche. Formed as single piece of clear glass with a solid knob handle, this one appeals for its unique and irregular form, with flaws and imperfections that add to its organic characteristics. There are pronounced striations and creases in the glass, together with numerous inclusions, and an infusion of tiny aerations all of which are typical to blown-glass. The solid glass knob has been partially lobbed off, and is in keeping with the thought that knobs were routinely broken-off from 19th cloches to allow an even diffusion of heat and light through the glass.
Condition: The cloche is a well-preserved example of what was once essentially a working garden tool. The glass is clean with excellent clarity, and in addition to the partially lobbed off knob, there is large air-bubble located on the inside at the base rim: Two small pieces of its glass skin along the rim edge have flaked off from the inside only, leaving the outside intact. Elsewhere, there are two small chips along the rim also on the inside, that aren’t particularly discernable, and there are scratches elsewhere.
Size: Base diameter is 21”. Height is 12”.
