The original item from Department 18 is now SOLD.
Very rare and one of a kind textile.
Hand sewn book cover, probably a bible.
circa. 17 July 1747
Silk threads sewn on a linen gauze.
15 cm (6") x 20cm (8").
This piece was hand sewn and bound on to card. In between are layers of hand made paper which made up the cover. These papers are a letter or maybe two, written by a nun from a convent in Ornais France and dated 17 July 1747.
The letter is still legible but unfortunately some of the card and paper has been eaten by woodworm. There are still at least three layers of paper stuck to the card.
The embroidery is mainly sewn with silk threads, the curtain edge, cross and buckle is bullion thread.
Condition is not the best (it is 270 years old). Most of the background, around the priest, has worn down to the base gauze, the back threads are still there. The embroidery is edged with a linen which was folded and sewn to the card.
