This is a truly rare antique icon. It is an image of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. He is shown riding a horse and spearing a gladiator. The icon is made of metal, possibly silver, with an opening showing a painting of the saint’s face.
Saint Demetrius was a soldier martyred during the Diocletian persecutions of the 4th century. He became very popular during the middle ages as the patron saint of soldiers and the crusades.
Condition: the frame is chipped along the lower edge and on the back. Please see Pictures.
