I found this great Inro box while traveling in China, It is on a cord so it can be a a necklace you can either wear or display. This etched water buffalo bone Inro box has four sections that fit into one another. It is secured it closed with a bone bead. The design on the Inro is of an Asian lady with her lover. The other side is etched with a fish. The Inro is in excellent condition. This makes a very dramatic necklace and can be displayed when you are not wearing it.
The Inro is 3” by 2 1/2” and drops 5” from a cord. The twill cord that is 26” around.
The inro was used as a seal container, medicine kit for carrying medicinal powders or herbs or for carrying other small treasures. Because the Japanese and Chinese clothing lacked pockets, men carried their small personal items suspended from their sashes by toggled cords fastened by an ojime (a small bead that can be moved up and down the double cord which helps to secure the lid of the inro). Both the inro and ojime were beautifully carved or decorated out of materials believed to possess magical and medicinal properties, or be significant to the wearer.
The fish is symbolic of abundance, prosperity, wealth and persistence. It is also believed to represent an advantage in business. The carp is considered the most favored of all fish. It symbolizes wealth, abundance, happiness and fertility. In China the carp is symbolic of determination and perseverance. It is believed that the carp can ascend the rapids and waterfalls of the wild Yellow River will eventually become a dragon. The carp also symbolizes success in school or study.
