This is an intricately carved piece of Chinese boxwood in the shape of a lock. It is carved with a raise design of two birds in a tree with the Chinese character for double happiness in the center. I have beaded this with 14 mm wood beads that are carved with the Chinese character for longevity and dragons. (shou). The wood beads are interspersed with bone beads with a unique design. The carved wood lock is 2 1/2” wide by 2” tall. The necklace is 26 inches around is finished with a 18k gold vermeil toggle clasp. This lovely necklace is lightweight.
The bird is highly favored as a favorable sign. It represents the Oriental’s love of nature. Birds as pets are very important in China and many households have them. The Chinese prize the song bird especially and take very good care of them, feeding them fresh insects and taking them to the park every morning much as we would our pet dogs. It is very common the see the parks full of older men and women early the morning each with their own caged pet bird at their side.
The Chinese have been carving boxwood figures for about 900 years. Boxwood is from the Chinese boxwood evergreen shrub which is native to Southeast Asia. Because it is fine grained and high density it can be carved in great detail yet it is light weight. The Chinese have been carving boxwood figures for about 900 years. It is also used to carve musical instruments. Romans used to place a twig of boxwood in their tombs.
