This green jade is carved in the shape of fish showing the detail of his face, eye, tail and scales. There is a carved lotus on the upper left and a carved upside down bat on the lower right. It is carved on both sides. The jade is 2 1/4” long by 1 3/8” wide. It is topped with a glass lamp work bead with the same green as the fish. The entire pendant drops 3” from a black natural leather cord that is adjustable from 16” to 32” (using slip knots) so it can be worn a variety of lengths.

The carp is considered the most favored of all fish. It symbolizes wealth, abundance, happiness and fertility. In China the carp is symbolic of determination and perseverance. It is believed that the carp can ascend the rapids and waterfalls of the wild Yellow River will eventually become a dragon. The carp also symbolizes success in school or study.

The bat is symbolic of happiness, good fortune, prosperity and longevity. When something is portrayed upside down it means it has arrived, so the common portrayal of an upside-down bat is symbolic of good fortune that has arrived. It is one of the best symbols of good luck. Two bats together means double good fortune.

The sacred lotus, also known as the sea rose, is a symbol of purity, fruitfulness and creativity. The lotus, an aquatic plant, grows in ponds or rivers, the roots planted in the bottom soil and the leaves float on the water. The blossoms rise above the leaves and are very showy. The lotus is often shown together with fish where it symbolizes prosperity year after year. It also symbolizes sexual harmony, the lotus representing the female and the fish representing the male.

Called the stone of heaven, jade has worn jade for centuries by Chinese royalty. It has been used since the Neolithic times for tools, weaponry, amulets, vases and figurines because of its hardness. It is believed to be a spiritual stone and has been called the jewel of heaven. It represents the five principal virtues: charity, modesty, courage, justice and wisdom. From cloudy white to golden brown, light to dark green, to rare lavender, jade is the most highly prized Asian gemstone. Jade has been regarded as the most precious stone for thousands of years and is treasured for its magical powers. It is believed to protect the wearer and ensure good luck and good health as well as to increase life span, which is why most Asians put a jade bangle on a baby’s arm and wear jade themselves.
