This gorgeous piece of Jade is carved deeply and in great detail on both sides so the necklace can be worn with either side facing forward. The jade is naturally two colors. On one side is carved a dragon in a golden brown color against the background of grayish green. On the grayish green side is carved a phoenix. I have beaded this necklace would 12 mm barrel shaped labradorite that has a lot of iridescence- both golden and blue. This picks up the color of the phoenix and complements the dragon.
The jade is 2 3/4” long by 2” wide. The necklace is 20 1/2” around and is finished with a large 18K gold vermeil hook clasp.
The dragon is the imperial emblem of the Emperors in China, especially from the from the Han period where their coat of arms shows two dragons fighting for the fiery pearl. The dragon is a supernatural creature and is the symbol of power, strength, wisdom and goodness. It represents the utmost in accomplishment: good luck and a successful life. It is also believed to be the guardian of hidden treasures. It represents the spirit of growth and change.
The phoenix, a mythical bird, is the emblem of the Empress and of beauty. It only appears in time of peace and prosperity. It is believed that a following of smaller birds is always present when the phoenix is flying.
It is symbolic of prosperity, rich harvests, and beauty. Together with the dragon it is symbolic of marriage – the dragon being the man and the phoenix representing the woman.
Called the stone of heaven, jade has worn jade for centuries by Chinese royalty. It has been used since the Neolithic times for tools, weaponry, amulets, vases and figurines because of its hardness. It is believed to be a spiritual stone and has been called the jewel of heaven. It represents the five principal virtues: charity, modesty, courage, justice and wisdom. From cloudy white to golden brown, light to dark green, to rare lavender, jade is the most highly prized Asian gemstone. Jade has been regarded as the most precious stone for thousands of years and is treasured for its magical powers. It is believed to protect the wearer and ensure good luck and good health as well as to increase life span, which is why most Asians put a jade bangle on a baby’s arm and wear jade themselves.
Labradorite carries a unique characteristic. It is a smoky black stone with a lot of iridescence in the intense color ranges of sea blues, gold and green in bright light. The darker variety is known as "black moonstone" which has a bluish inclusions. It comes from the coast of Labrador and Finland and was first found along the coast of Labrador in 1805.
I can adjust the length of this necklace some.
