We will be offering for sale some wonderful pieces of art and a collection of rare books from the estate of John Vacarro over the coming weeks. John was the founder of the lower East Side, Manhattan Theatrical Group, "Playhouse of The Ridiculous," and a major force in the downtown art seen from the mid 1960's well thru the 1990's. This particular listing is a painting done by famed graffiti artist, CHICO.
Antonio "Chico" Garcia is recognized as one of the most prominent Graffiti artists and has been commissioned to do murals all over the world including Italy and in England where he spray painted a mural in Piccadilly Circus to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's death. His work is also on view at the Nova Gallery in Amsterdam. He has been featured in articles in the New York Times and has made his home in Manhattan's lower East Side where he has also been commissioned to do many outdoor murals. This particular oil painting depicts the Bowery that was know up until it's major gentrification for many many years as the home to the down trodden in NYC who had an affinity for drink. This is where you would go if you wanted to "go on a bender" and there have been many documentaries done on life in that part of NYC. The painting measures 47" by 71" and is in vibrant primary colors. It is signed in the lower right hand corner with the artists name as well as in the painting itself. The painting was purchased at La Galleria at La Mama in NYC in 1985 and confirmed by the original receipt (which we are more than happy to supply to the new owner.) Due it's size, we can only ship UPS. Shipping charges will reflect that. The painting hung in Mr. Vacarro's lower East Side loft.
