A unique and beautiful Lakota woman's belt bag done in deep bottle green, white heart red, cobalt blue, greasy yellow and white seed beads. The fringe on this bag was once stained with copper verdigris or green trade paint, although much has worn off over the years. This pretty woman's bag was inspired by the French beaded bags that the Victorian women carried in town or at the cavalry post. These along with French parasols and other imported niceties were sometimes copied by native artisans, this being an prime example. Worn suspended from a concho belt, bags like these carried ration tickets, small coins or tokens used in trade. It is a beautiful example of 1890's cultural borrowing.
Measuring 5" x 8 1/2".
