These Victorian era antique tassel earrings feature hundreds of tiny faceted cut-steel beads.
Each earring has 9 tassels of twisted cut-steel micro-beads that dangle and swing to provide movement so they catch the light.
Cut steel jewelry dates back to at least the sixteenth century and became the height of fashion in the eighteenth (Georgian) and nineteenth centuries (Victorian). The polished silvery-gray steel jewelry was made to imitate the glitter of diamonds and sparkle in candlelight. These could look stunning in a bridal or wedding party.
The tassels hang from a larger ¼” wide cut-steel many faceted sphere and a smaller round steel ball and bead. The ear wires are a later addition and are not original.
Condition: Very Good, no repairs, twisted tassel strands are strung on thread, not wire. Care should be taken to keep them dry, as cut steel jewelry is susceptible to rust., which is why the jewelry is more difficult to find today.
