This intricate impressive brooch is marked ”Sterling” ”Made Italy”. The very same pin is often signed Peruzzi, although this one is not signed. There is a small mark, a lozenge with cut sides, below the cut-out below the word STERLING. Very small and hard to read. In the center is the "fasces", an ancient Roman symbol, an axe bundled with birch sticks, and a two letter abbreviation of the province in which the silversmith was Registered. The letters FI are marked here, indicating Firenze or (Florence), where Peruzzi worked.
To the left of the fasces is the number that denotes the silversmith, but I cannot make out those numbers.
These symbols were required on silver between 1934-1944, and this governmental regulation ended after WWII.
I find the Renaissance Revival style so romantic with the design motifs of cherubs or putti, female figures, the intricate three dimensional crown and heraldic shield, scrolls and swirls and sea creatures hidden in the swirls. Peruzzi jewelry showed a high level of craftsmanship and detail.
Size: 2- ¼ inches long by 2 inches wide; wt: 12 grams, sterling
Very Good condition with a beautiful warm aged patina. All original, no damage.
I have not attempted to clean this piece, but any silver pin can be more polished if desired.
