A dazzling Georgian cut steel brooch with a floral motif and articulated bottom piece with three dangles. In general, the smaller the studs and size and closeness of the rivets, as seen on the back, the finer and older the piece, which make me feel this antique brooch dates to Late Georgian times, but certainly early Victorian times.

The cut steel jewelry process dates back to at least the sixteenth century and became the height of fashion in the eighteenth (Georgian) and nineteenth centuries (Victorian). The polished silvery-gray jewelry was made to imitate the glitter of diamonds and sparkle in candlelight. The painstaking creation of this jewelry is truly amazing.

Cut steel jewelry is very collectible. Most was made in England. The process of hand cutting and polishing each steel bead, then riveting it onto a back piece was extremely laborious and time-consuming.

Size: The total length of the pin with the 3 dangles is 3 inches x 1-3/4 inches wide. The flower section is 1-7/8 inches long by 1-3/4 inches wide. Please note that the brooch appears larger in the photos as it is magnified.

Condition: Fine condition, no repairs, original condition with a lovely bit of sparkle. A slight bit of tarnish, not rust, on the 3 dangles. Care should be taken to store the brooch in a dry area as cut steel jewelry is susceptible to rust which is why jewelry in good condition is more difficult to find today.
