Circa 1960s, this attractive pair of busts-a man and a woman- are typical of the African tribal art from Besmo. Kenya. They are carved from ebony, a dense black hardwood valuable as an ornamental wood. The heads are set on based incised with an intricate pattern. The man's beard would be the envy of any hipster. They are not marked and probably once had paper labels on the bottom.
The male statue measures 10" high x 2 5/8" wide x 4 1/4" deep. Weight is 2 lb 3.4 oz. The woman measures 8 3/4" high x 2 1/2" wide x 3 3/4" deep and weighs 1 lb 12.7 oz. There are a couple of nicks.
