A charming little antique sterling silver match safe or vesta case made in England in 1904 to be worn as a fob on a watch chain. The surface is covered front and back with an Art Nouveau pattern of engraved leaves. The front has a diamond-shape cartouche left unembellished for the owner's initials: uncharacteristically, it has not been monogrammed. The case has a hinged closure and thumb latch and it closes tightly allowing it to hold tiny valuables securely (since those small matches are hard to find nowadays). The bottom has a grooved inset for the old strike-anywhere matches. This vesta could be worn on a watch chain or as a pendant on a chain necklace.
The inside lip is stamped with the British hallmarks for sterling silver, city of Chester, England, the date 1904, and maker T & S (E.J. Trevitt & Sons). It measures 1 3/4" x 1 1/4" x 7/16" and weighs 18.8 grams. It has a small dent on one upright edge.
