A realistically carved wooden bulldog by the German painter and sculptor Helmut Diller (1911-84) whose dog sculptures are most desirable. This piece was made for and marketed by ANRI an Italian company specializing in wood carving creations since 1872. The bulldog is sitting on a triangular wood plinth. It is well carved and painted in a realistic combination of tan, russet and brown with black facial accents. The back left haunch is incised/signed DILLER. The original ANRI foil label is missing from the bottom but one can see the "shadow" of where it was. The piece dates from ca 1960s.
The base measures 3 1/8" x 2 5/8" (dog is similar in size) and the total height is 3 3/8". It weighs 3.2 ounces. Condition is quite good except one dent behind his left ear (last photo) which may not be original; it is the same color as russet spots on the neck and legs There is a little loss of paint around the ears, barely noticeable.
