The scene gracing the top of this late 19th century cinnabar box is quite endearing. Three generations of Chinese males are interacting in a wooded outdoor setting. The bearded elder is talking and a younger man and a boy are listening in great amusement - they have big smiles on their faces. The carving is deep, crisp and detailed down to the leaves on the trees and the expressions on the faces of the men.
Geometric repeating diamond and squares cover the surface around the sides of the top and bottom and also serve as the background for the scene on the cover of the box. The interior of the box is black lacquer.
Dimensions are 5 5/8" (14.3 cm) long by 3 5/8" (9.2 cm) wide by 1 7/8" (4.7 cm) high. The cover has cracks at the corners where the mitered pieces fitted together , but it doesn't detract from the look or integrity of the box.
