Found in the locked safe of the estate of a well to do collector, I am assuming these to be old and esteemed pieces. Carved in the round from a hard soapstone, the dozing cat has an annoyed expression with its ears flattened back and its tail flicking over its back aimed at the large butterfly which has alighted near its head. The smooth finely polished stone feels good to the touch and it displays the simplicity of old carvings. The pale green gray stone has some russet inclusions. There are two of these, almost identical but one has more russet color and larger more deeply incised details.
Each measures 2 5/8" (67 mm) x 2 1/4" (57 mm) x 1 1/4" (32 mm) high and weighs 145 grams. There is an old chip, darkened and hard to spot, near the celadon cat's right front paw and a bruise near its right eye.
There are two of these almost identical carvings. Please indicate which one you would like. Buy both for 15% off.
