19th century Italian Majolica trilobated shaped wine cistern embellished with curled serpent handles and Istoriato decoration. Vividly colored hand painted enamels are typical of this ware and reminiscent of the Renaissance wares of Urbino and Cantagalli.
Cisterns were historically filled with cold water and used to cool wine flasks. They were placed on the floor near the dining table and were usually decorated with Roman Renaissance scenes. The bowl is in excellent condition with minor restoration. This piece would be make an elaborate center bowl for any table especially a coffee table as the beautiful scene is best observed from above.
