Presented for sale is a delightful 18th century oil painting on canvas depicting a couple of Commedia dell’arte actors posed on a road with a seascape in the background. The woman is possibly the famous Italian actress Isabella Da Padova (1562 - 1604) who was a member of the Compagnia dei Comici Gelosi, a famous touring theatre company. Although born into a poor family, Isabella was well-educated, speaking several languages and developing the art of improvisation. She became famous throughout Europe and her plays were patronized by the aristocracy.
The painting is very charming with a touch of poignancy as she seems to assist her crippled companion. This could be just part of the act because these Comedies, as they were fondly known, depicted real life tragedies with a sense of humorous style.
The painting has strong earthy colors with some minor areas of restoration and in-painting. The carved and painted frame shows minor signs of wear.
