Presented for sale is an oil on canvas by English artist William Watson, Jnr. (United Kingdom, 1831-1921), depicting sheep on a rocky landscape signed "W. Watson" and dated "1916". The painting is typical of the Romanticized idyll that was favored by the Watson family of artists who specialized in Animal portraiture. The work is finely detailed with emphasis on the faces of the Highland Sheep, the Rocky Crags of the Scottish Highlands and the beautifully illustrated sky.
William Watson, Jnr. was the son of William Watson, Sr. also an artist. He gained fame by painting charming renditions of animals in their natural settings mostly in the Scottish Highlands. He was the most successful of the Watson family of painters and his pieces usually demand higher prices. We have had several of his pieces in our inventory and are always looking for more. Their charm and beauty is visibly evident.
The painting is housed in a heavy carved frame. The painting has been cleaned and the frame restored to perfection. The painting does exhibit age craquelure that is stabilized.
