Presenting for sale is a very charming figure after Kate Greenaway modeled for Royal Worcester by James Hadley. The figure features a young man in blush apricot ground colors perched on a tree stump with his leg casually resting on a large woven oval basket. Hadley is impressed on the base.
Kate Greenaway was a 19th century artist and writer known for her children’s book illustrations. She was fond of dressing them in 18th century attire. James Hadley worked for Royal Worcester before leaving to form his own factory. He was one of the best and most respected modellers of the 19th century.
Sweetmeat was a 19th century delicacy and many serving pieces were dedicated to its presentation. Worcester was known for its blush finishes as seen on this piece, they really have no comparison. The piece is dated early 20th century and is in excellent condition with a small pin-prick chip repair to the rim of the boy’s hat.
