Presented for sale is a rare pair of Coalport cups & saucers, circa 1815-20 decorated at Anstice, Horton, & Rose part of the early factories of Coalport. The cups are fitted with London handles. These historic pieces are almost an exact copy of the set ordered for Lord Milford in 1818 and decorated by Thomas Pardoe. Mr. Pardoe purchased Coalport blanks already decorated in underglaze blues to which he added his own decoration. The cups & saucers are beautifully enameled in botanicals of oranges and greens highly stepped up with gilt vinery. The saucers have exactly the same decoration and dimensions, but you'll notice that the feet are slightly different.
The cups & saucers are in basically in pristine condition and look to have been in a cabinet to be admired for the last 200 years. The incredible enamels and their clarity are a testament to the artistry of Mr. Pardoe and the Coalport designers who set the precedent amongst tableware manufacturers for years to come. Thomas Pardoe was also known to have decorated pieces for Swansea Potteries, Nantgarw and Bristol as well.
