Offered for sale is an impressive oil on canvas by noted British artist, Sawry Gilpin (1733-1807). The painting depicts a horse and dogs in a landscape and is typical of the style and genre of Gilpin's work.
Sawrey Gilpin was born in the Cumbria area of Northern England and learned to draw from his father who was an amateur artist. Showing great promise, his family sent him to London to study under marine painter Samuel Scott, but it soon became evident that he preferred to sketch animals. The rest of his life was devoted to this pursuit. The Duke of Cumberland, being greatly impressed by his work, became a dedicated patron. In his time, Gilpin gained considerable recognition for his paintings and became one of the most famous animal artists and illustrators in England.
The painting is signed lower right. The condition is as follows: Minor surface dirt and craquelure associated with age, Painted surface bowing. Few small scuffs to paint. Light frame wear. Lined and restored. Lining is wavy.
