Offered for sale is a beautiful 19th century Napoleon III bronze-mounted work table made by Tahan of Paris. The oval shaped top is resplendent with a sandalwood panel inlaid with floral marquetry surrounding a darker panel inlaid with instruments. The top is hinged and opens to reveal a Birdseye maple fitted interior with cubbyholes, compartments and a mirror. The table is raised on fluted legs and is mounted in bronze.
Alphonse Tahan was the official cabinetmaker to Napoleon III and was known for his exquisite workmanship. His petite tables and boxes were works of art and were desired by his upper class patrons, the only customers that could afford his pieces. His craftsmanship received many awards at expositions and his pieces were collected throughout Europe.
The table is in excellent condition and signed on the lock. It is quite common for these tables to be a little wobbly as the legs are quite delicate and care should be taken in moving it.
